It was a cooler morning after yesterday’s heat and as a storm had rolled through it had cleared the air. So in pleasant conditions, we returned to Freycinet National Park for the classic Wineglass Bay circuit. Soon after we left the car we heard a voice “Hi Steve and Sue, what walk are you doing today?”  It was the lovely young woman we had met yesterday on our way down from Mount Amos who wasn’t able to make it to the top. It was a pleasant surprise to see her again.

I was keen to do this walk as it is considered one of the best day walks in Tasmania. We planned to complete the parkrun at Zeehan, Tasmania’s newest parkrun for event number 4 and hike tomorrow. The weather however had different ideas. With showers and wind forecast for Sunday and a fine afternoon today we had to make it happen.

After very ordinary weather, with rain and high winds, yesterday we were pleased to wake to a clear and calm morning. With very limited parking in the National Park, it is necessary to take a shuttle bus between the hours of 8:00am and 5:30pm to access the park. However, you are allowed in before 8:00am until the parking spots fill up. Expecting a long day, we decided to go in early to avoid being dependent on the shuttle bus service.

Our start was a little slow this morning after our big Mount Anne walk yesterday and decided to change campgrounds to Mount Field National Park (first in gets a spot). After organising a lovely spot by the river we headed up the road towards Lake Dobson, only 16km but about half an hour on a winding dirt road.

It was yet another gorgeous morning and we attempted to make an early start to walk to Cape Hauy and Mount Fortescue as the walk was recommended in our guidebook (about 18km). Doubts started to set in when we arrived at the trailhead with a sign saying “No access to Mount Fortescue and Mount Pillar”.

Departing from Narawntapu National Park Visitor Centre Parking at 1:10pm we first headed along the road towards Bakers Beach. Being just past low tide on a clear, calm day we had very easy walking on firm sand. Here, there were lots of seashells along the high water mark, interspersed with cuttlefish remains and fragments of seaweed. There were also interesting wind ripples in the dry sand creating artistic patterns where the highest wave of the morning tide had partially wet the sand. John and Sue powered ahead as Geri and I lingered, looking for the most interesting, intricate ephemeral details.

Now on our way to Tasmania, a side trip to visit our Jindabyne family gave us the opportunity to go on a local walk today. Beth suggested Charlotte Pass to Perisher Valley but settled for the reverse when I suggested we keep the sun at our back. So, after dropping one car off at Charlotte Pass Village we drove back to Perisher Valley, leaving the second car in front of the Ski Tube Terminal, as there were work-related closures at the track head.

This was our last day for the 2023 edition of New South Wales Nordic Ski Club’s annual Charlotte Pass gathering, a week where the club takes over the Southern Alps Ski Lodge and tries to get out for as much backcountry skiing as possible. Due to the rapidly decreasing snow cover and the fact our daughter and son-in-law had arrived home to Jindabyne from a European holiday yesterday, we thought we would catch up with them for the weekend before heading home. With that in mind, a morning walk towards Porcupine Rocks was in order before our 2:00pm departure.
