Thursday 17/09/2020      Red Track – Bretons Creek – The Slot Canyon – Bungonia Gorge

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

With rain forecast for later in the day we were packed up and walking around 8:00am. Starting from the picnic area near Troy Walls Lookout we headed west for several hundred metres before turning north as the track heads sharply downhill towards Bungonia Gorge following Bretons Creek. This is a very scenic descent at this time of the year with plenty of flowering plants in full bloom. A very impressive stand of grass trees is found about half way down creating an impressive foreground for the view to the west of the cliffs towards Adams Lookout.

I have been wanting to do a trip into the Clyde River – Holland Gorge area for many years. It must be about 40 years since I was in the area and then only briefly whilst crossing from north to south, Folly Point and across to Monolith Valley and Mount Tarn in the 1980s. With major bushfires burning through the region last summer I thought there might be less scrub bashing than in recent years.

Mermaids Pool – Bargo River – Tahmoor Canyon

Monday 28/09/2020      Mermaids Pool – Bargo River

                                            Dharug country

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

Apparently daydreaming as we were heading west along Picton Road I managed to turn right onto the Hume Highway on our way to Picton! Not the best start. Anyway, we did find the drive back along Remembrance Drive to be rather scenic and more rural than we may have expected.

Having lost about half an hour on our detour we didn’t reach the carpark just south of Rockford Bridge until about 9:30am. Here a group of about ten 20 somethings were also just heading off towards Mermaids Pool, at least we had a nice fine day which would reach the mid 20’s temperature-wise.

Morton National Park had only recently reopened after the horrifically devastating 2019-2020 Currowan Bushfire. Having walked numerous times in the area over many decades we were keen to revisit the area to observe the extent of the damage and find out how well it was regenerating. With less scrub around than for a long time, it also promised much easier access than usual.

Sitting on the edge of the Illawarra Escarpment directly above Farmborough Heights and Mount Kembla this combination of walks gets you into the bush very quickly from anywhere in the Wollongong area. Two or three hours should be enough to see most people have an enjoyable walk, taking in the bush, some history and fantastic views.

A crisp winter’s day did not dampen the spirits of a keen group of South Coast Bushwalking Club members to get going. An earlier reconnaissance party confirming our intended route closed due to road closures on Jacks Corner Road from summer fires, we set off on plan B up McPhail’s trail. A hill climb that would get any faint heart firing meant we soon climbed from the lowest point to highest point in Kangaroo valley.
