We were looking for some relief from our CoVid lockdown within our LGA. To achieve this we set out with the idea of hiking the Cascades Rainforest Walk before heading on and upward to join Clover Hill Road and walk back via Macquarie Rivulet. The reality turned out to be very different, I really should start looking up current National Parks closures!

Some of us managed a leisurely pre-walk coffee in Keiraville, thus ensuring a bit of urgency down the track.

Tuesday 29/09/2020      Wattamolla – The Coast Track – Little Marley Beach – Marley Beach – Marley Head – Wedding Cake Rock – The Waterrun – Bundeena – Jibbon Hill – Marley Head Trail

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

After reports from friends of waratahs in flower on Curra Moors Track we decided to revisit the area for the day. Our plan was to complete a return loop from Wattamolla, off Sir Bertram Stevens Drive, to Bundeena starting along The Coast Track. Just like yesterday, our walking started after problems getting to our starting point. Heading north into Sutherland a traffic sign indicated Sir Bertram Stevens Drive was closed and detours were in place, no indication of where the road was closed or if it was closed for its entire length. From our reading of the sign we needed to head in via Audley. After driving to the Parks northern entrance station we found we were mistaken, the road being closed at Audley where they were replacing the bridge across the Hacking River.

Sitting on the edge of the Illawarra Escarpment directly above Farmborough Heights and Mount Kembla this combination of walks gets you into the bush very quickly from anywhere in the Wollongong area. Two or three hours should be enough to see most people have an enjoyable walk, taking in the bush, some history and fantastic views.

A crisp winter’s day did not dampen the spirits of a keen group of South Coast Bushwalking Club members to get going. An earlier reconnaissance party confirming our intended route closed due to road closures on Jacks Corner Road from summer fires, we set off on plan B up McPhail’s trail. A hill climb that would get any faint heart firing meant we soon climbed from the lowest point to highest point in Kangaroo valley.

Over the weekend of 3rd – 4th December 2016 South Coast Bushwalkers Club organised their annual Christmas Celebration at Budderoo National Park. On Saturday morning Jason Shanks lead a grade 4 walk in the Missingham Steps area. The group left the camp ground heading west towards Missingham Lookout where there are views far down along the Kangaroo River Valley. From here we meandered along the tops for a while before heading down Missingham Steps to the Kangaroo River. A nice pool was located and many of us jumped in for a quick swim.
