  *** Celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of my first bushwalk ***

Fifty years ago as a Form 4 (Year 10) Narwee Boys High School student I set off on my first overnight bushwalk. Our party of four caught an early train from Strathfield to Blackheath from where we completed an eventful three-day round trip via Govetts Creek and Blue Gum Forest.

With three possible free campsites identified as stopovers on our journey to Bright, we were off to escape the NSW coastal deluge. We ended up at Woomargama Rest Area, stretching our legs with a walk around the village before settling in for the night. We were pleasantly surprised by the high proportion of modern dwellings and the amenities at the rest area.

Over the weekend of 3rd – 4th December 2016 South Coast Bushwalkers Club organised their annual Christmas Celebration at Budderoo National Park. On Saturday morning Jason Shanks lead a grade 4 walk in the Missingham Steps area. The group left the camp ground heading west towards Missingham Lookout where there are views far down along the Kangaroo River Valley. From here we meandered along the tops for a while before heading down Missingham Steps to the Kangaroo River. A nice pool was located and many of us jumped in for a quick swim.

Jenny, Peter and Stephen had big plans for an 18 day traverse of the Western Arthurs, Eastern Arthurs and Picton Range. Trish and Dave were joining us for the Western Arthurs. With meticulous planning we were carrying all 18 days of food, Peter and I had 28.6kg packs and Jenny 26.8kg. Needless to say the best laid plans don’t always come off, as possibility the worst summer weather for 30 years presented some very big challenges.
