We headed off as a party of five from Sligachan. To access the track we crossed a lovely stone bridge, dodging the gauntlet of tourists grabbing their Instagram shot before returning to the Sligachan Hotel or their cars. Then we passed a statue of two old white men before leaving behind the vast majority of people.

The track then undulates very gently as it heads steadily through Glen Sligachan upstream along River Sligachan for several kilometres. Around 3km in Sue and I left the others who had decided to return to their car.

As we were now freer to walk at our own pace we made more rapid progress, noting the changing views on our left of the Red Cuillins’ Beinn Dearg and Marsco and after crossing Allt na Measarroch (creek) on our right the Black Cuillins’ Pinnacle Ridge, Sgùrr nan Gillean and Meall Dearg.

Our objective had evolved as we progressed, our aim becoming to round the corner of Druim Hain to view the coast. Around this point we passed a small unnamed loch on Allt nam Fraoch-choire, after which we walked through a very damp, squishy section of track before getting to near the southern end of Loch na Creitheach. At this point, we could not distinguish the coastline but got a good view down along Loch na Creitheach and the mountains on each side. Here we decided to turn around at around the 10km mark and head back.

Whilst still collecting a few more photos on our return, we kept up a bit faster pace along the way and were back to the car before we knew it.
