Mount Ulriken – Mount Floyen

Thursday 22/06/2017   Mount Ulriken – Mount Floyen

                                          Bergen, NORWAY

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

This popular day walk is easily accessible by bus and gondola from Bergen. It is best to hike from Mt Ulriken as it is considerably higher than Mt Floyen. Another gondola at Mt Floyen allows for a quick and scenic ride back into downtown Bergen.

Total distance: 15.88 km
Max elevation: 629 m
Total climbing: 700 m
Total descent: -923 m
Average speed: 3.58 km/h

The weather was not really favourable when we headed off but as this was the only day we had to do the walk we persisted. It was actually quite miserable when we left the gondola. The wind had picked up, it was freezing and it was raining lightly. Anyone with common sense would not likely commence a thirteen kilometre walk between two mountains in those conditions. The cafe at the top of the gondola was tempting us but we decided to press on after changing into warmer clothes.

We had some difficulty finding the track we wanted in the initial stages as there seemed to be trails leading in all directions. It was quite muddy as well and very soon after we commenced the fog descended and with it went all hope of any views. Still we kept going. It was fairly clear that these conditions were common in this area as there were large cairns built to mark the trail every hundred metres or so along the higher sections of the trail. In fine conditions we could only imagine the views you would enjoy along this ridge top walk.

After walking about six kilometres through mud and uneven rocky terrain we started to descend and for a brief period we were below the fog. This revealed some picturesque lakes. Sadly, our views didn’t last long and soon the fog and drizzle returned.

The latter part of the of the walk was along a gravel road which made for faster and easier travel. The return gondola ride took us directly into downtown Bergen and a well deserved coffee and hot chocolate stop. Not the best day for this hike but it was good to get out and get some very fresh air and exercise.
