White Island – NEW ZEALAND

White Island (Whakaari) is an active marine (cone) volcano situated in the Bay of Plenty. To the Maori Whakaari is a treasured ancestor and features in many stories and legends of the region. It is estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000 years old and is 49km offshore. The closest town is Whakatane, on the North Island of New Zealand. At the time of our trip it was possible to visit the island by helicopter or by boat and guided tour with White Island tours. 

Tragically, on 9th December 2019 White Island erupted while tours were being conducted resulting in numerous deaths and horrific injuries. All tours were immediately suspended.

Yukon Wildlife Preserve – YUKON

As we were not having much luck with wildlife sightings since our arrival in Canada we took the opportunity for some guaranteed sightings at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve just out of Whitehorse.

Whitehorse to Haines Junction – YUKON

Another driving day trip from Whitehorse, this time we were heading due west towards Haines Junction.

The mountains again seemed endless, punctuated by lakes and rivers. It is truely impressive country!

Whitehorse to Alaska – YUKON

This was a driving tour from Whitehorse heading south towards the Alaskan border. Our first stop was Emerald Lake which was a stunning emerald colour, even though it was still partially frozen.

Kananaskis Trail – ALBERTA

Beth took us for a drive to some scenic spots not too far from the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, including the Upper Kananaskis Lake, Mount Kidd, Mount Lorette and Mount Sparrowhawk.
