Whitehorse to Alaska – YUKON

Thursday 21/3/2019   Whitehorse to Alaskan Border Sightseeing

Participants: Anne-Marie DaSilva, Walter Brennan, Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

This was a driving tour from Whitehorse heading south towards the Alaskan border. Our first stop was Emerald Lake which was a stunning emerald colour, even though it was still partially frozen.

The scenically situated town of Carcross was our next stop. It was originally known as Caribou Crossing but we didn’t see any on this day. It is home to the Carcross / Tagish First Nation community. Unfortunately, the coffee shop was not open as it was too early in the season. We enjoyed the views across partially frozen Bennett Lake and listened to locals talk about hunting animals, a popular pastime in this area.

We continued along the Klondike Highway stopping at Tagish Lake with impressively intricate patterns of melting ice on it’s surface.

We continued heading towards the US border and White Pass, noting the absence of a wall at this border! As we had not applied for a US visa we pulled up and turned around before the custom check point, although we had entered US territory. The melt was starting here with lots of brown snow visible. The mountains appeared to go on forever.

We returned via the same route.
