Photos with these descriptions/qualifiers have been uploaded to iNaturalist, both to contribute to its Citizen Science objectives and to help positively identify living things I have photographed. I have begun using iNaturalist Nomenclature throughout this website in both reports and photo captions since 2026. Where local signage had species-level identification, it has also been used.
iNaturalist Nomenclature
Research Grade: Community agreement on the ID, generally at species level or finer. Reflects iNaturalist’s community agreement rules, not a formal expert verification or guarantee of correctness.
Needs ID: Has the basic evidence (photo/sound, date, place) but still needs ID work or agreement.
Casual: Not eligible for Research Grade—for example, missing a date, location, or evidence; captive/cultivated; or otherwise unsuitable. Does not necessarily mean the identification is wrong; it is primarily a data-quality and eligibility category.
Local Signage
Signage/Label: had a sign on the specimen identifying it as this species.
