Saturday 13/04/2013 Yarramummun Fire Trail – Boolijah Creek
Ettrema Wilderness, NSW
Participants: Melissa Ardern, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, Dave Whitelaw
The start of this walk is located on a small side track off the Yarramunmun Fire Trail, which is accessed via the Nerriga road. Apart from a stroll in along the fire trail the walk is completely off track with no defined path. The clamber down the creek gives good views of cascades and waterfalls, the most pleasant being the large pool at the lowest section of the creek reached on the walk.

We were on a short break to the South Coast of NSW to try to assist with the local economic recovery following the disastrous bushfire season which devastated the bush, wildlife and local communities during our past summer.
We have many fond memories of camping at the North Head with friends when our children were young. Arriving again in 2020 we were very happy to find this section of the bush untouched by the fires. The campground is set in a particularly beautiful grove of large spotted gums dotted with huge cycads and supporting abundant wildlife.

Over the weekend of 3rd – 4th December 2016 South Coast Bushwalkers Club organised their annual Christmas Celebration at Budderoo National Park. On Saturday morning Jason Shanks lead a grade 4 walk in the Missingham Steps area. The group left the camp ground heading west towards Missingham Lookout where there are views far down along the Kangaroo River Valley. From here we meandered along the tops for a while before heading down Missingham Steps to the Kangaroo River. A nice pool was located and many of us jumped in for a quick swim. Continue reading →

Great weather for a day walk from Bundeena to Little Marley Beach. During this walk out of Bundeena we passed by Jibbon Hill along the Coast Track until reaching The Waterrun at the coast. Continuing south along the Coast Track we passed a multitude of coastal cliff views before reaching Marley Head. Just south of Marley Head where Marley Head Trail joins The Coast Track you get views to the south west of Marley Beach and Little Marley Beach, our final destination for the day before heading back to Bundeena after beautiful winter’s day walking. A highlight of the day was seeing some aboriginal rock art etched into sandstone. Continue reading →

An overlapping commitment and repeatedly delayed start due to poor weather prevented me from joining fellow NSW Nordic Ski Club skiers at Grey Mare Hut from their starting date last Friday. Undeterred, I ended up completing a very enjoyable slow, meandering, ten day solo tour in ideal weather conditions. This was highlighted by exploratory day trips on the Grey Mare Range seeking out the best photographic vantage points, a close-to bush bash down to Pretty Plain Hut and multi-night star trail shooting opportunities.

Originally I had planned to arrive at the Pounds Creek campsite Damien had organised before anyone else, as I was going to connect my Charlotte Pass trip with his and avoid a trip home. I had 11 days of food and the rest of my gear packed and ready to go. However, my Mount Townsend day had consequences in the form of blisters on both heals from being clueless on how to adjust my new boots, I also ended up with a throat infection and lower back problem from consecutive long days. My better half also had suffered a bad cold for the last two weeks and had broken her fifth metacarpal (hand) so it was certainly best I drove home. Once everything settled enough I was heading back much later than first planned to connect with Damien’s now also finished trip. As it turned out I was still somewhat before par and had a low activity trip.

Opting for company today I joined up with Kenn’s group who were aiming for Little Austria. With snow bridges still strongly present we were quickly across the Snowy River and climbing towards the pass between Mount Lee and Carruthers Peak. The short steep ascent up and over the lip of the ridge proved challenging to those with lighter boots and skis.
After limiting weather the last two days we awoke to calm conditions and a clear blue sky. The mixed bag of destinations on offer included Watsons Crags, Mount Kosciuszko and Lake Albina. Planning to do more skiing next week in those areas I opted out, aiming instead to ski in the area of Mount Lee.
Participants: Angela Barton, Helen Cromb, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Tim Hager (Leader), Kathy Husselbee, Ken Moylan, Gordon Newell, Jean
After sitting out a day of wind and rain yesterday we were pleased to see a dusting of fresh snow this morning. Tim suggested a day trip to Lake Albina which attracted a group of nine. We headed out under a low cloud cover shortly after 9:00am.

Day one of the annual NSW Nordic Ski Club’s Southern Alps Ski Lodge week for 2019. With excellent snow cover and observing how well covered Betts and Spencer Creeks were on the trip up from Perisher Valley Kenn Clacher suggested a day trip to Mount Tate via Spencers Creek. A party of fifteen headed out at 9:00am.
24/05/2015 – 25/05/2015 Long Gully – Byangee Mountain
Morton National Park, NSW
Yuin country
Distance: 12km Total Ascent: 830m Total Descent: 830m Time: 8 hours
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)
This 12km bushwalk begins by crossing the Yadboro River before following Byangee Trail up to the cliff-line below The Castle. From here one follows a rough track eastward along the cliff base to and across Castle Gap, before continuing around the cliff base on the northern side of Byangee Mountain. Further on a rock cairn can be found at the bottom of the ascent route which involves a tight squeeze a one point and some scrambling, don’t put all your faith in the old ropes found in a couple of steep sections!
Along the way check out “The Cathedral” and the natural rock arch concealed just around the corner on the north side immediately before Castle Gap. The 360 degree views from the top Byangee Mountain amongst the best in New South Wales.
