We were expecting wet feet today as we knew there were several creek crossings to get through Clarke Gorge, with this in mind we headed off with our boots on and crocs tied to our daypacks. Heading directly out the end of Blue Waterholes Camping Area you immediately walk down the small hill and face the first crossing.

I was keen to join in on Paul’s posted five-day New South Wales Nordic Ski Club trip. He had advertised a very interesting trip entering via Scammels Lookout Road, with a plan to visit Pretty Plain Hut, Grey Mare Hut, O’Keekes Hut and Jagungal. Approaching the start date it became obvious there would be a distinct lack of snow along the proposed route, so he came up with an alternate plan. We all spent Friday night at Paul’s newly purchased property outside of Berridale so we could make an early start on the planned long day skiing from Guthega Power Station to Mawsons Hut.
Sunday 24/07/2022 Cascade Trail Car Park – Cascade Trail – Thredbo River – Boggy Plain – Teddys Hut – Wombat Gully

Participants: Beth Davies, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, Andy Treasure, Emily Treasure, Pablo Ureña Vega
We were looking for a day trip to do with Beth and Pablo on for their day off work. Once we decided to try to get out to Teddys Hut, Pablo extended the invitation. Emily and Andy decided to join us as they happened to have Emily’s parents visiting who were able to babysit for them. Being a weekend we left early in an attempt to avoid the worst of the ski traffic and get spots to park our cars at Cascade Trail Car Park. The early start worked a treat as there was only one car in the car park when we arrived.

Following excellent snowfalls in early June, Damien saw an opportunity present itself for an extended backcountry ski trip. The classic K to K (Kiandra to Mount Kosciuszko) over 11 days, including car shuffle, was proposed. He promptly made a few phone calls and posted his trip on the New South Wales Nordic Ski Club website to gauge interest.
After two very CoVid 19 disrupted previous seasons I jumped at the opportunity to join in after last attempting this trip, solo, in 1986 when I was forced to finish early via Guthega Power Station due to cold, windy, whiteout conditions.

This was a short solo walk back to Cooleman Cave with the sole objective of taking some better photographs than during yesterday’s visit. This time I was carrying a tripod, a white chopping board to act as a diffuser and a couple of small LED lights.

With Selwyn Ski Resort having been destroyed by bushfires on 6th Januaruy 2020 work was now underway on its replacement. As such, Kings Cross Road was closed about 1km past the Link Road turnoff. Undeterred, we parked outside this no go zone and made our way with a little bush bashing, cross country towards the Telstra tower past the closure.

So far, my family and I have been very lucky to have escaped CoVid-19. We have largely kept to ourselves, masked up when around other people and obtained all vaccinations as soon as we could. We were also very lucky to have been able to take advantage of good snow-falls in mid-June and spend six days lift skiing at Perisher Valley. Being easily excited, I spent one of my first days back home diligently going through all my snow-camping kit and packing it ready for a quick getaway as soon as the next opportunity arose. It turned out to be a long wait between ski trips.

On our last trip this way we arrived at the Porcupine Rocks Track trailhead to find it closed for the day. National Parks had a helicopter ferrying in bags of gravel along the track for planned track work. Today we ran into two work parties each working on new metal gratingbehind tapped of sections we detoured around.
Monday 21/02/2022 Cascade Trail Carpark – Dead Horse Gap Walking Trail – Kosciuszko Trail – Eagles Nest
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
We started the day purchasing a two year National Parks Pass for our brand new Trakkadu campervan and grabbing some last-minute groceries. Departing Jindabyne we were on our way with the aim of getting in several day walks and having our first sleep on the new van, three nights at Nagiraro Campground. After claiming a campsite (by pitching a two-man tent for the snorer in the family) we drove up the Thredbo Valley to Cascade Trail Carpark, arriving about 11:00am.

As Pallaibo Walking Trail was closed along the Thredbo River from Thredbo River Picnic Area to Gaden Trout Hatchery for track work, we instead departed from the Hatchery car park. Nestled on the Thredbo River there is a large, well maintained grassy picnic area with great access for water play.

A wet night at Ngarigo campground didn’t deter us from our morning activities. As Sue was training for the upcoming Mount Stromlo Trail Running event she headed off on a 10km run towards Thredbo Diggings Campground whilst I walked towards Thredbo along the Thredbo Valley Track.

It was a very cool summer night last night at Nagiro Campsite, the morning greeting us with low clouds. On our arrival at the Cascade Trail Carpark we wondered what was going on as a convoy of four, four wheel drive vehicles joined us at the same time as three motor cyclists.
