Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report)
This was a short solo walk back to Cooleman Cave with the sole objective of taking some better photographs than during yesterday’s visit. This time I was carrying a tripod, a white chopping board to act as a diffuser and a couple of small LED lights.

With Selwyn Ski Resort having been destroyed by bushfires on 6th Januaruy 2020 work was now underway on its replacement. As such, Kings Cross Road was closed about 1km past the Link Road turnoff. Undeterred, we parked outside this no go zone and made our way with a little bush bashing, cross country towards the Telstra tower past the closure.

So far, my family and I have been very lucky to have escaped CoVid-19. We have largely kept to ourselves, masked up when around other people and obtained all vaccinations as soon as we could. We were also very lucky to have been able to take advantage of good snow-falls in mid-June and spend six days lift skiing at Perisher Valley. Being easily excited, I spent one of my first days back home diligently going through all my snow-camping kit and packing it ready for a quick getaway as soon as the next opportunity arose. It turned out to be a long wait between ski trips.

Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
On our last trip this way we arrived at the Porcupine Rocks Track trailhead to find it closed for the day. National Parks had a helicopter ferrying in bags of gravel along the track for planned track work. Today we ran into two work parties each working on new metal gratingbehind tapped of sections we detoured around.
Monday 21/02/2022 Cascade Trail Carpark – Dead Horse Gap Walking Trail – Kosciuszko Trail – Eagles Nest
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
We started the day purchasing a two year National Parks Pass for our brand new Trakkadu campervan and grabbing some last-minute groceries. Departing Jindabyne we were on our way with the aim of getting in several day walks and having our first sleep on the new van, three nights at Nagiraro Campground. After claiming a campsite (by pitching a two-man tent for the snorer in the family) we drove up the Thredbo Valley to Cascade Trail Carpark, arriving about 11:00am.

Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
As Pallaibo Walking Trail was closed along the Thredbo River from Thredbo River Picnic Area to Gaden Trout Hatchery for track work, we instead departed from the Hatchery car park. Nestled on the Thredbo River there is a large, well maintained grassy picnic area with great access for water play.

Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
It was a very cool summer night last night at Nagiro Campsite, the morning greeting us with low clouds. On our arrival at the Cascade Trail Carpark we wondered what was going on as a convoy of four, four wheel drive vehicles joined us at the same time as three motor cyclists.

After realising that since most of the participants in our party are now retired, our traditional, annual Wheelers Hut weekend walk could be moved to mid-week. This offering less road traffic and hopefully the chance for greater solitude. We agreed to meet on Tuesday evening at Three Mile Dam, just past the turnoff to Mount Selwyn ski resort. The temperature variation on the drive down was quite extreme – moderate on the coast (low 20’s), 37C whilst driving through Gundagai and then was a cool 12C at 3 Mile Dam. The March flies were out in force to greet us as we set up camp for the evening. A rain shower saw us scurry off to bed for an early night.
23/02/2021 – 25/02/2021 Olsens Lookout – Geehi Flats – Guthega – Mount Anderson – Mount Anton – Mount Twynam Tennyson Woods Knoll

Distance: 32km Total Ascent: 1730m Total Descent: 1730m Time: 15 hours

It was quite an adventure just to get to the start of this walk and what enormous anticipation there was in it’s planning. Our daughter, Beth, was only home from almost three years overseas for two weeks after her mandatory fourteen-day Covid-19 hotel quarantine with her partner Pablo. They had been planning for six months how they might make their journey to Australia happen.
Thursday 10/12/2020 Rennix Walk, Boggy Plain Creek, Rams Head Range, Snowy Hydro radio reflector
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
Rennix Walk crosses Sawpit Creek which is just beyond the car park at Rennix Gap. Then it follows Boggy Plain Creek upstream to the north for about 1km. Along this section, we observed a multitude of wildflowers in bloom. Moving away from these boggy meadows onto the ridge the track gently meanders over a series of 30m high bumps through subalpine meadows, snow gum woodlands and open plains.
Thursday 10/12/2020 Rainbow Lake Walking Track – Rainbow Lake
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
To fill out our day after completing the Rennix Walk we moved on to the nearby, short Rainbow Lake Walking Track. We were a little curious as to what we might find having previously driven straight past so often on the way to Charlotte Pass or Perisher Valley.
Friday 11/12/2020 Guthega Power Station – Munyang Geehi Road (Schlink Pass Road) – Horse Camp Hut
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
Our last walk in Kosciuszko National Park for this trip needed to be fairly short in order to catch up with some High School friends in Canberra later today. Having camped at Island Bend meant a walk up Schlink Pass Road from Guthega Power Station, which we have frequently travelled in winter, might be a nice option to see without snow cover. It would also provide an opportunity to investigate alternative routes.
