Day 1: Wednesday 13/5/2015   Sassafras – Folly Point

We commenced our walk from Sassafras on a crisp clear morning.  It was five degrees as we weighed packs and wished yet again that we had packed lighter, except for Stuart who managed to fit five days worth of food and gear into his 11kg pack. This, in the end disadvantaged him as he as he was allocated the climbing rope which added a further two kilograms. Steven won with a total of weight of 23kg including all his camera gear.  Sue carried a respectable 15.7kg load.

I hadn’t been into Monolith Valley since the eighties and was keen on seeing its marvellous sandstone features again. We commenced this fantastic day trip on a cool crisp morning. Due to the consistent rain in the previous week the drive through several locked gates was challenging as some of the puddles of water were up to the car number plates and there were sections that were very slippery. As Will was the only driver with a two wheel drive, he chose to leave his car and bike the last kilometre to the car park where the rest of us commenced the ride. At this stage, after riding through the mud and pooled rainwater he was regretting his decision to wear a white T shirt that day.

After picking John Meehan, Lance, Bruce and Jo up by 7:30pm we were heading south. After a couple of beers at the Leprechaun Hotel we drove through and camped alongside the car in the tent by the side of the road. An amazingly fortunate choice of campsite as all the tent pegs went in very easily and remained firm all night.
