Wednesday 6/09/2017 Thredbo village – Cascade trail
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)
A lovely ski through the trees up along the Thredbo River with the added bonus of wildlife including brumbies and lyrebirds.
We headed off from Thredbo village across the golf course, the clubhouse was complete with huge icicles hanging off the front. The snow was ample along the trail but the depth was challenging at times. This trail would be best suited to walking in summer as it was quite narrow and would be treacherous to ski down. The Thredbo river was scenic with pillows of snow throughout. We saw brumbies with snow up to their fetlocks.
About 1.5km from the Cascade trail we headed up to the road as the vegetation became thick. We found a spot for lunch and the Bothy bag came out. It was a cosy affair having lunch in it but it kept us warm.
We decided to stick to the road for the ski down and there was snow coverage for most of the way. This provided a much faster route back to the village. The resident lyrebird greeted us as we skied past.
This route provided a pleasant day ski when the weather conditions were not particularly favourable with snow and high wind speeds as it was relatively sheltered.
