Having enjoyed participating in a park run here on Saturday we returned today to have a look at the waterbird sanctuary. This would be best viewed at dusk or dawn but it was still pleasant to have a wander around this wetland conservation area. There are freshwater billabongs, salt marshes and mangroves and saline areas around the former racecourse and walking and cycling tracks.

We were on a short break to Merimbula so decided to sample a section of the Light to Light Walk as a day trip.

We started with a short detour to the historic Boyd’s Tower located on Red Point. It was built by Benjamin Boyd but was never commissioned as a lighthouse. The lookout was closed and appeared to be fire damaged. From Red Point there were great views of the Pacific Ocean, Eden and Twofold Bay.

After an enjoyable overnight farmstay on the edge of Moruya we spent some time driving around the beautiful nearby coast looking for some walking opportunities. Initially rather tentatively, as there was some light drizzle about.

Still, by 10am we settled on a very short, mostly beach and rock platform walk around Broulee Island. The Island itself appears to be untracked and is densely vegetated with littoral rainforest.

Having just completed four walks in Kosciuszko National Park, catching up with some High School friends and enjoying a parkrun in Canberra we proceeded to Bannisters Mollymook to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary in luxury. It seems that may not really be our style as on our free day we both quickly agreed to forgo the palatial setting and head out on another walk. Pigeon House Mountain had only recently reopened after last summer’s Currawan bushfire closure, so we settled on checking it out yet again.

Distance: 34km   Total Ascent: 1210m   Total Descent: 1210m   Time: 15 hours

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

I have been wanting to do a trip into the Clyde River – Holland Gorge area for many years. It must be about 40 years since I was in the area and then only briefly whilst crossing from north to south, Folly Point and across to Monolith Valley and Mount Tarn in the 1980s. With major bushfires burning through the region last summer I thought there might be less scrub bashing than in recent years.

Morton National Park had only recently reopened after the horrifically devastating 2019-2020 Currowan Bushfire. Having walked numerous times in the area over many decades we were keen to revisit the area to observe the extent of the damage and find out how well it was regenerating. With less scrub around than for a long time, it also promised much easier access than usual.

Long Gully – Byangee Mountain

Distance: 12km   Total Ascent: 830m   Total Descent: 830m   Time: 8 hours

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

This 12km bushwalk begins by crossing the Yadboro River before following Byangee Trail up to the cliff-line below The Castle. From here one follows a rough track eastward along the cliff base to and across Castle Gap, before continuing around the cliff base on the northern side of Byangee Mountain. Further on a rock cairn can be found at the bottom of the ascent route which involves a tight squeeze a one point and some scrambling, don’t put all your faith in the old ropes found in a couple of steep sections!

Along the way check out “The Cathedral” and the natural rock arch concealed just around the corner on the north side immediately before Castle Gap. The 360 degree views from the top Byangee Mountain amongst the best in New South Wales.

The old folks (Steve and Sue) took the young ones (Beth, Cristina and Darren) on an overnight adventure, including Cristina who had never been camping before. We arrived at Long Gully campground on Sunday afternoon and set up camp ahead of the young ones who arrived to the luxury of tents erected, sleeping bags out and dinner ready. The campground was the most crowded we had seen it as after all it was a long weekend. After the day trippers left, however, we had a peaceful evening and enjoyed a campfire on a clear calm warm evening.

Day 1: Wednesday 13/5/2015   Sassafras – Folly Point

We commenced our walk from Sassafras on a crisp clear morning.  It was five degrees as we weighed packs and wished yet again that we had packed lighter, except for Stuart who managed to fit five days worth of food and gear into his 11kg pack. This, in the end disadvantaged him as he as he was allocated the climbing rope which added a further two kilograms. Steven won with a total of weight of 23kg including all his camera gear.  Sue carried a respectable 15.7kg load.
