Sunday 09/07/2006     Bundeena – Little Marley

                                          Tharawal country

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

Great weather for a day walk from Bundeena to Little Marley Beach. During this walk out of Bundeena we passed by Jibbon Hill along the Coast Track until reaching The Waterrun at the coast. Continuing south along the Coast Track we passed a multitude of coastal cliff views before reaching Marley Head. Just south of Marley Head where Marley Head Trail joins The Coast Track you get views to the south west of Marley Beach and Little Marley Beach, our final destination for the day before heading back to Bundeena after beautiful winter’s day walking. A highlight of the day was seeing some aboriginal rock art etched into sandstone.

An overlapping commitment and repeatedly delayed start due to poor weather prevented me from joining fellow NSW Nordic Ski Club skiers at Grey Mare Hut from their starting date last Friday. Undeterred, I ended up completing a very enjoyable slow, meandering, ten day solo tour in ideal weather conditions. This was highlighted by exploratory day trips on the Grey Mare Range seeking out the best photographic vantage points, a close-to bush bash down to Pretty Plain Hut and multi-night star trail shooting opportunities.

Day one of the annual NSW Nordic Ski Club’s Southern Alps Ski Lodge week for 2019. With excellent snow cover and observing how well covered Betts and Spencer Creeks were on the trip up from Perisher Valley Kenn Clacher suggested a day trip to Mount Tate via Spencers Creek. A party of fifteen headed out at 9:00am.

Long Gully – Byangee Mountain

                                                   Morton National Park, NSW

Distance: 12km   Total Ascent: 830m   Total Descent: 830m   Time: 8 hours

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

This 12km bushwalk begins by crossing the Yadboro River before following Byangee Trail up to the cliff-line below The Castle. From here one follows a rough track eastward along the cliff base to and across Castle Gap, before continuing around the cliff base on the northern side of Byangee Mountain. Further on a rock cairn can be found at the bottom of the ascent route which involves a tight squeeze a one point and some scrambling, don’t put all your faith in the old ropes found in a couple of steep sections!

Along the way check out “The Cathedral” and the natural rock arch concealed just around the corner on the north side immediately before Castle Gap. The 360 degree views from the top Byangee Mountain amongst the best in New South Wales.

Today a mixed ability group in excess of twenty people, led again by Colin Ridley, set out in an attempt to summit Mount Townsend. Along with our NSW Nordic Ski Club group we had visitors from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. Sue and I left separately a couple of minutes earlier, heading further up Kosciuszko Road than the main group to take some panoramas of the Main Range.  Continue reading

With the forecast overnight snow not eventuating along with overcast skies and cold wind blowing together with an overnight freeze there was no reason for an early start. So after 10:00am Sue and I departed, traversing across the nearly deserted but still operating downhill slopes to Charlotte Pass. It was cold and felt like more than the forecast 40km/h headwind. Tuesday’s forecast temperature was 8C with winds to 70km/h after an overnight low of -4C. Finding somewhere out of the wind seemed the best idea. After waiting a while for the snow to soften after it’s overnight freeze we headed straight up the hill behind the lodge hoping the trees would provide a little shelter. We were still too early for our planned return descent, as there were still plenty of frozen sections in the shade around the trees, so after ascending most of the hill we headed further around towards Wrights Creek in order to find a slope that had seen more morning sun.  Continue reading

Participants: Margaret Baz, Helen Cromb, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, John Fuller, Kathy Husselbee, Jacque Paynter, Stephen Poole, Colin Ridley, Jean, Kevin, Rod, Wayne

A lack of recent significant snowfalls, warmer temperatures early last week and recent overnight minimums of about -10degrees have the cover set hard. With the days forecast of cold winds to 50km/h our options were limited. Hoping that the recent light snowfalls may have accumulated on the lee side of Rams Head Range our party of thirteen led by Colin had decided to head over to Twin Valleys hopeful of some shelter that it may provide and to ski the pockets of snow we envisaged would be found there. Charlotte Pass – Trapyard Creek – Wrights Creek

                                      Ngarigo country

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

We arrived at Southern Alps Ski Lodge by oversnow transport from Perisher Valley in the afternoon of the previous day after a polar system had injected a mass of cold air and strong winds across the area earlier in the day. We were disappointed that at most a centimetre of snow came with it. So, after some warm weather earlier in the week we were left with a hard, frozen base with patches of fresh windswept snow.
