Morton National Park had only recently reopened after the horrifically devastating 2019-2020 Currowan Bushfire. Having walked numerous times in the area over many decades we were keen to revisit the area to observe the extent of the damage and find out how well it was regenerating. With less scrub around than for a long time, it also promised much easier access than usual.

A crisp winter’s day did not dampen the spirits of a keen group of South Coast Bushwalking Club members to get going. An earlier reconnaissance party confirming our intended route closed due to road closures on Jacks Corner Road from summer fires, we set off on plan B up McPhail’s trail. A hill climb that would get any faint heart firing meant we soon climbed from the lowest point to highest point in Kangaroo valley.

Great weather for a day walk from Bundeena to Little Marley Beach. During this walk out of Bundeena we passed by Jibbon Hill along the Coast Track until reaching The Waterrun at the coast. Continuing south along the Coast Track we passed a multitude of coastal cliff views before reaching Marley Head. Just south of Marley Head where Marley Head Trail joins The Coast Track you get views to the south west of Marley Beach and Little Marley Beach, our final destination for the day before heading back to Bundeena after beautiful winter’s day walking. A highlight of the day was seeing some aboriginal rock art etched into sandstone.

An overlapping commitment and repeatedly delayed start due to poor weather prevented me from joining fellow NSW Nordic Ski Club skiers at Grey Mare Hut from their starting date last Friday. Undeterred, I ended up completing a very enjoyable slow, meandering, ten day solo tour in ideal weather conditions. This was highlighted by exploratory day trips on the Grey Mare Range seeking out the best photographic vantage points, a close-to bush bash down to Pretty Plain Hut and multi-night star trail shooting opportunities.

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)

This 12km bushwalk begins by crossing the Yadboro River before following Byangee Trail up to the cliff-line below The Castle. From here one follows a rough track eastward along the cliff base to and across Castle Gap, before continuing around the cliff base on the northern side of Byangee Mountain. Further on a rock cairn can be found at the bottom of the ascent route which involves a tight squeeze a one point and some scrambling, don’t put all your faith in the old ropes found in a couple of steep sections!

Along the way check out “The Cathedral” and the natural rock arch concealed just around the corner on the north side immediately before Castle Gap. The 360 degree views from the top Byangee Mountain amongst the best in New South Wales.
