I’ve wanted to complete this walk for a while. It opened in March 2024 and is recommended as a two-day walk. With a total distance of 19km, we decided to try it as a day walk. Just to wet our appetite, we wandered down from camp and had a look around the Scenic World section on the Monday evening.
Thursday 17/09/2020Red Track – Bretons Creek – The Slot Canyon – Bungonia Gorge
Bungonia National Park, NSW
Gundungurra country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
With rain forecast for later in the day we were packed up and walking around 8:00am. Starting from the picnic area near Troy Walls Lookout we headed west for several hundred metres before turning north as the track heads sharply downhill towards Bungonia Gorge following Bretons Creek. This is a very scenic descent at this time of the year with plenty of flowering plants in full bloom. A very impressive stand of grass trees is found about half way down creating an impressive foreground for the view to the west of the cliffs towards Adams Lookout.

After our Clyde River (Morton National Park) exploration trip was cut short by two days we decided yesterday afternoon to head up to Bungonia National Park for three days before some expected rain was due by the weekend. One day at home was more than enough turnaround time.

This scenic loop down into the Nattai River valley is accessed from the car park at the end of Wattle Creek road near the small town of Hilltop. The final ten minutes of the drive are on dirt. The road is suitable for two wheel drive vehicles.

This varied and enjoyable day walk to Bonnum Pic culminates in a spectacular knife edge ridge. There are expansive scenic valley views, interesting geology and some rock scrambling. It is recommended for the cooler months as there is no reliable water supply. However, it would be best not to attempt it when there is a severe weather warning for damaging winds! Continue reading →

Day 1: 7/07/2012 Long Point – Shoalhaven River – Bungonia Creek
So you thought it would be too cold? A pleasant 10 degrees outside and 22 inside Steve and Sue’s (trip leader) Davies car as we wound our way up Jamberoo Pass. Ninety minutes later the three of us climbed out into a crisp 5 degrees at the Long Point car park.
