Monday 19/09/2022 Charlotte Pass – Wrights Creek – Rams Head Range
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW
Ngarigo Country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
As Sue had been feeling unwell the last couple of days we had planned to head out together to see how she went. Having found herself puffing to climb the single flight of stairs at the Skitube in Perisher yesterday we weren’t all that hopeful. (She had returned a negative RAT test just before we left home, so it likely wasn’t CoVid).
Max elevation: 1991 m
Total climbing: 399 m
Total descent: -393 m
Average speed: 4.25 km/h

It was a cool and cloudy morning with the top of all of the nearby peaks under cloud. We headed around to and up along the west side of Wrights Creek. There was plenty of snow with good grip. As we climbed up along the creek we saw some good tracks on the hillside above and the skier and board who had made them below, they had had a great morning in the untracked terrain.
We paused along the steep part of the creek for some photos before passing the small waterfall and adjacent steep pitch. From here on there is a gradual climb to the top. Today we diverted to get amongst the rime-encrusted boulders and tors towards our left, again trying to make the most of this very photogenic landscape.
Around the tops the wind was fairly strong and cold, making our planned return via Mount Stilwell look very uninviting. We did the almost regulation inspection of the remnants of the old chairlift top station and associated structures below before a short, quickly aborted foray directly into the wind before turning back into the much more protected valley along Wrights Creek. We had a quick chat with a group of skiers from the neighbouring Pygmy Possum lodge. It was a pretty quick return ski to the lodge for lunch.
