Faced with a miserable, wet, windy day we caught up with chores and reading until the late afternoon when conditions improved enough to tempt us outside. This was a very short walk from the campground along Tidal River, onto and along Norman Beach and back to camp via the Oberon Track.

Again the morning was not showing a lot of promise weather-wise. It had been showery with gusty winds all night and that continued into the early morning. During the 30-minute drive from Tidal River Campground to the Five Mile Road Carpark to start our walk there were two very heavy showers. However, as we arrived it was looking a little better. It seemed our delayed, 10:00am start might have paid off, at least to start with.

We departed Darby Beach Carpark at 9:40am, appreciative of it being heavily overcast but for the first time in many days not windy or raining. We had been to Darby Beach on the Wednesday but the weather to too unpleasant for us to be tempted to start out.

The Tongue Point Track gradually climbs from the carpark to provide a good view of the meanders of “Darby” Creek to the east as it passes through thick heath. After climbing about 90m you pass through a saddle to catch your first glimpse of Tongue Point, immediately you realise this is going to be a very scenic walk.

With heatwave conditions currently across Australia, we were pleased to note the local forecast for today was for a 24-degree maximum. Just in case, we got away from Jindabyne early enough to arrive at Charlotte Pass and be underway by 8:50am. There, we were greeted by clear blue skies, 12 degrees with a light breeze making for perfect walking conditions.

After completing our Saturday morning parkrun in Euroa, we cleaned up, had breakfast and entrusted Siri to get us to Mount Samaria State Park. We came in from the northern end and found the gravel road to be of good quality, except for a couple of potholes sections which were marked. The road is narrow in sections and could make passing another car rather interesting in a few places.

A very short but steep walk to the highest point in Buffalo National Park. Pablo, having finished Sunday’s 42km Buffalo Stampede in 4 hours 48 minutes was in great discomfort with every step. He was forced to kind of hobble his way along.

I headed out alone for a short walk before we were to pack up and leave to drive further north today. Just out of the caravan park, there is a vehicular track called Blackfellows Point Road, which heads up to the top of a ridge and follows it towards the west. I wasn’t far along here when I encountered a couple of Red-necked Wallabies, one with numerous ticks on its face! Perhaps I should try to avoid brushing against vegetation today.

Overcast skies greeted us in the morning but the threat of afternoon rain made us head off soon after breakfast. We had hoped to make it to Dalmeny and the possibility of coffee and treats if we made it that far.

As it turned out this goal was more than a little optimistic! From our campground, we attempted to walk around Blackfellows Point (shocking antiquated racist names in this area) but we didn’t get too far before our progress was stopped by a deep impassable gully. We headed back to Blackfellows Road, past Piccaninny Beach, Blackfellows Beach and Blackfellows Bridge. It was all a bit too much.

After another very comfortable night in our campervan at Pambula Beach Caravan Park, we headed off to explore the area to our south. After a short drive along the Princes Highway just past Pambula Lake we turned off onto Haycock Road into Beowa National Park. Beowa National Park has recently been renamed and the new name means Orca in the local Thaua language. Here we had eyed off some very short walks that would require a short drive between each.

Driving south from Haycock Point we drove to the Eden tip which was where our next walk started. Close to the road and very close to the tip, it was not really the ideal spot to have lunch or to start a walk. A high clearance four-wheel drive would negate the need to even walk this track but we decided not to risk it with our long-wheel base van. A mountain bike would be another good option.
