Sunday 12/11/2017 Mount Hallowell – Lights Beach – Wilson Head
Denmark, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Minang country
Participants: Ian Cockerill, Junko Cockerill, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, Dave
At Ian’s suggestion we found ourselves in Denmark for a couple of nights. He and Junko driving down from Perth for the weekend to stay with friends in the next street and to join us for a local walk with Dave. The weather in Denmark was overcast and decidedly cooler than the rest of the weather we had previously encountered on this trip. This made for much more comfortable walking conditions.
Max elevation: 282 m
Total climbing: 694 m
Total descent: -706 m
Average speed: 4.61 km/h
Total time: 04:26:08
Our morning walk started from Ocean Beach Road where we joined the Bibbulmun Track via the Wymn Trail, climbing through karri forest to the top of Mount Hallowell. Unfortunately, by the time we reached the top the clouds had arrived in force, providing plenty of atmosphere, but no views.
From Mount Hallowell we walked past Monkey Rocks, then across Lights Road and down to join the WOW Trail just above Lights Beach. Then along through lower coast dune vegetation just in from the coast, then past Point Walton, the 800kW community wind farm and onto the Ocean Beach Lookout. Here there are excellent panoramic views over the 20km long Wilson Inlet, feed by the Denmark and Hay Rivers, along Ratcliffe Bay with Nullaki Peninsula sitting between the two. It was an very enjoyable half day walk.
Sunday 12/11/2017 Green Pool – Elephant Rocks
With time to spare in the afternoon, as recommended, we visited Elephant Rocks and Greens Pool, a short drive to the west of Denmark. Elephant Rocks comprise a number of large very impressive and photogenic granite boulders dappled with black and orange-red lichens. The overcast conditions really helping these colours to stand out. Green Pool would likely be at its best on a warmer day, under clear blue skies with little wind. An excellent spot for a swim.
