Wild Dog Creek Campsite – Wild Dog Creek Falls

Sunday 29/05/2022   Mount Samaria Road – Summit Link Track – Wild Dog Creek Campsite – Wild Dog Creek Falls

                                        Mount Samaria State Park, VICTORIA

                                        Taungurung Country

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

The track to Wild Dog Falls starts from a small Carpark on Mount Samaria Road at the bottom of the Mount Samaria Summit Link Track. The forest here is varied and the track is easy to follow. It is only about 800m until you walk into Wild Dog Creek Campsite. This is an excellent campsite with a long drop toilet, two picnic tables and a stone-lined fire pit. A fantastic spot to take anyone to for a very peaceful camp with plenty of shade for warmer weather, however, we didn’t see where you might collect water.

After summiting The Horn we walked the track to the summit of The Hump. The Rocky climb to the top ends with a series of massive granite tors with ladders to the summit. Again fantastic views from the top, especially to the neighbouring Cathedral and more distantly The Horn.

A very short but steep walk to the highest point in Buffalo National Park. Pablo, having finished Sunday’s 42km Buffalo Stampede in 4 hours 48 minutes was in great discomfort with every step. He was forced to kind of hobble his way along.

Wollongong Botanic Gardens

Participant: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report)

This was a short excursion to Wollongong Botanic Gardens to try out my new camera on birds. The Canon EOS R5 is a very sophisticated camera, after many hours of reading the user guide and trying to figure out the various options I needed to do some field testing. What better than picking a pretty local with a reliable presence of birdlife.

Beachcomber Caravan Park – Blackfellows Point Road – Ness Track South – Tuross River – South Tuross Beach

I headed out alone for a short walk before we were to pack up and leave to drive further north today. Just out of the caravan park, there is a vehicular track called Blackfellows Point Road, which heads up to the top of a ridge and follows it towards the west. I wasn’t far along here when I encountered a couple of Red-necked Wallabies, one with numerous ticks on its face! Perhaps I should try to avoid brushing against vegetation today.

Murramarang Beachfront Nature Resort – Wasp Head Walking Trail – Mill Point – Wasp Head – Emily Miller Beach Walking Track – Wobbegong Bay – Emily Miller Beach – Wasp Head Road – South Durras

Murramarang Beachfront Nature Resort was our final stop over on our way home so we made the most of our afternoon with one last walk. Via a short stint along the beach, we made our way around the northern edge of the headland where we found what looked to be an old boiler from a shipwreck marooned on the grassy foreshore. All the way around to Mill Point we got great views up to Murramarang Range and Grasshopper Island.

Overcast skies greeted us in the morning but the threat of afternoon rain made us head off soon after breakfast. We had hoped to make it to Dalmeny and the possibility of coffee and treats if we made it that far.

As it turned out this goal was more than a little optimistic! From our campground, we attempted to walk around Blackfellows Point (shocking antiquated racist names in this area) but we didn’t get too far before our progress was stopped by a deep impassable gully. We headed back to Blackfellows Road, past Piccaninny Beach, Blackfellows Beach and Blackfellows Bridge. It was all a bit too much.

To round out our day we drove to the carpark on Dolphin Cove Drive at the southern end of Tura Beach. From here we walked tracks we suspected to be mostly frequented by local residents getting out for some exercise and fresh air. From the carpark, you descend onto the beach and walk around a tannin-stained lagoon before climbing a relatively new staircase to gain access to the walking track just above.

After another very comfortable night in our campervan at Pambula Beach Caravan Park, we headed off to explore the area to our south. After a short drive along the Princes Highway just past Pambula Lake we turned off onto Haycock Road into Beowa National Park. Beowa National Park has recently been renamed and the new name means Orca in the local Thaua language. Here we had eyed off some very short walks that would require a short drive between each.

Getting older and trying to keep getting out amongst nature, hiking the trails, exploring the scenery and appreciating the wildlife encounters. We are slowing down but don’t admit it to ourselves very often. We still get in 20km days in the mountains but are leaning more toward day walks based on our new campervan. After a day of walking it has been magical to return to the van and enjoy a cold drink or normal food and cooking, a great night’s sleep on a “real” bed secure in any weather. It has been making it easy to explore the types of places we love.

This is a scenic 5km return walk along Merimbula Boardwalk. It starts from a small carpark at the north-western corner of the Market Street Bridge which crosses Boggy Creek on the southern edge of Merimbula. The western end terminates at a small wharf that incorporates a cafe. Scattered along the boardwalk are interpretive signs outlining information about the local ecology, usage and history of the lake. It makes for a pleasant short stroll.

Driving south from Haycock Point we drove to the Eden tip which was where our next walk started. Close to the road and very close to the tip, it was not really the ideal spot to have lunch or to start a walk. A high clearance four-wheel drive would negate the need to even walk this track but we decided not to risk it with our long-wheel base van. A mountain bike would be another good option.
