Friday 16/12/2022   Jervis Bay Road – Munyunga Waraga Dugan Walking Trail  – Murrays Beach –  (Murrays Trail) – (Old Murrays Track) – (Helipad Track) – Murrays Hill – Snapper Point – Devils Elbow – Governor Head – (Governor Head Track)

Participants: Beth Davies, Lauren Davies, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, Sam Solt, Pablo Ureña Vega

This is an awesome short walk that has a striking amount of variety in its 6km. The almost tropical-looking Murrays Beach was our first stop. Here the usually turquoise water laps up onto the light-toned, fine-grained sandy beach which is fringed by lush green trees after three La Nina years. A narrow arc of sand on the shores of Jervis Bay where you can often see dolphins, whales or stingrays swimming nearby. We can thank Lauren and Sam for revisiting the area, as they hail from Scotland, are currently working in New Zealand, were in Australia for Pablo and Beth’s wedding and really wanted to spend some time in the area as Lauren had great memories of visits in years past.

After five of us had completed our 8:00am Huskisson parkrun in 25 minutes or better we returned to our AirBNB for breakfast. From there we headed out to Steamers Beach carpark in Booderee National Park where we waited just 5 minutes for Bec to join us from Canberra. Although Steamers Beach itself was closed due to the building of a new staircase down to the beach, we headed along the track to Steamers Beach Lookout to catch some views of it from above.

It was a fine sunny morning as we set out on the short loop walk with the aim to have a look around Haycock Point and Haystack Rock. As we were setting out we chatted to a National Parks contractor who was working on weed control. We noticed that he had sprayed himself and as well covered himself with long sleeves, pants and full gaiters. He told us that the ticks were out in force so we took precautions as well.

Having enjoyed participating in a park run here on Saturday we returned today to have a look at the waterbird sanctuary. This would be best viewed at dusk or dawn but it was still pleasant to have a wander around this wetland conservation area. There are freshwater billabongs, salt marshes and mangroves and saline areas around the former racecourse and walking and cycling tracks.

All four of us may have jumped out of the car together at the Scenic World Carpark but that was a far as I was going with them! They were very keen on a trial run over the 11km Ultra-Trail Australia trail running racecourse. Scheduled for May 13 the 11km event follows Narrow Neck Plateau Trail before descending the Golden Stairs and returning along Federal Pass Walking Track and up Furber Steps. Still in recovery mode from an Achilles injury, I was off for a walk by myself, with plans to see them along the way.

We were expecting wet feet today as we knew there were several creek crossings to get through Clarke Gorge, with this in mind we headed off with our boots on and crocs tied to our daypacks. Heading directly out the end of Blue Waterholes Camping Area you immediately walk down the small hill and face the first crossing.

This was a short solo walk back to Cooleman Cave with the sole objective of taking some better photographs than during yesterday’s visit. This time I was carrying a tripod, a white chopping board to act as a diffuser and a couple of small LED lights.

With Selwyn Ski Resort having been destroyed by bushfires on 6th Januaruy 2020 work was now underway on its replacement. As such, Kings Cross Road was closed about 1km past the Link Road turnoff. Undeterred, we parked outside this no go zone and made our way with a little bush bashing, cross country towards the Telstra tower past the closure.

On our last trip this way we arrived at the Porcupine Rocks Track trailhead to find it closed for the day. National Parks had a helicopter ferrying in bags of gravel along the track for planned track work. Today we ran into two work parties each working on new metal grating  behind tapped of sections we detoured around.

Cascade Trail Carpark – Dead Horse Gap Walking Trail – Kosciuszko Trail – Eagles Nest

We started the day purchasing a two year National Parks Pass for our brand new Trakkadu campervan and grabbing some last-minute groceries. Departing Jindabyne we were on our way with the aim of getting in several day walks and having our first sleep on the new van, three nights at Nagiraro Campground. After claiming a campsite (by pitching a two-man tent for the snorer in the family) we drove up the Thredbo Valley to Cascade Trail Carpark, arriving about 11:00am.

Childowla Trail – Barrenjack Trail – Barren Jack Walk – Barren Jack Mountain

                                       Ngunawal Country

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies, Geri Louis, Dave Whitelaw

Amongst road cycles, running, tennis games, frisbee golf, bird spotting and kayaking activities four of our mid-week party staying at Burrinjuck managed a walk up to Barrenjack Mountain. We drove up to and parked before the locked gate at the end of Childowla Trail, with the Link Trail  (Hume and Hovell track) starting on the other side of the road.

On Childowla Trail we were surprised to encounter a National Parks vehicle heading out to do some work. For a good length of this section we disturbed a multitude of butterflies, often dozens at a time, that fluttered around as they were disturbed. It was a pity that they were too small to adequately capture a picture to do the scene justice. We also noted several different bird species, mostly from their song.

As Pallaibo Walking Trail was closed along the Thredbo River from Thredbo River Picnic Area to Gaden Trout Hatchery for track work, we instead departed from the Hatchery car park. Nestled on the Thredbo River there is a large, well maintained grassy picnic area with great access for water play.
