This solo skiing trip was my first snow camping adventure for 2018. It provided some great skiing to tune the legs for the season to come and the usual early winter variability in weather along with a couple of amazing sunsets. The greatest challenge though proved to be getting mobile phone reception to confirm my safety and report progress.

Hannels Spur runs up from the Geehi River to the West of the Main Range up to the highest peaks in Australia. This 1,800m climb is the biggest in Australia.
Damien and I had both harboured ambitions to complete this walk for some time. However, heavy regrowth after the 2003 bushfires that devastated the area meant there had been some serious scrub bashing along the route for some time. Fortunately for us we had some inside information that National Parks were planning a work party early in 2018 to clear some of the worst of this regrowth. After watching the weather for a few days, a good part of this week appeared promising. So Sunday afternoon saw me departing Dead Horse Gap just after 2:00pm with the aim of camping at the top of the ridge just north of South Rams Head. Maybe I could get really lucky and catch some Aurora Australis as last night had produced a good display in the Northern Hemisphere and it was expected to linger.

We met at Steve’s at 1700 on Friday and began the long drive down. It seemed things were against our skiing this weekend. Some people had had to pull out of the trip due to injury and other commitments, and then things continued as the weekend progressed. Just before Canberra Steve pulled over because something felt funny. Sure enough we had a flat (caused by a nail), though luckily the spare was accessible and we managed a quick change. The rest of the drive to Jindy was uneventful, reaching Nuggets Crossing at 2330, just in time to get our skis, stocks and boots from Wilderness Sports ($60 for 2 days). We continued on the last leg of the drive out to Thredbo Diggings (Bullocks Flat) where we set up the tent and were asleep by 2330.
