Yesterday we had sort refuge from the forecast 35-degree afternoon high, somewhere in the shade. This turned out to be Lakes Beachfront Holiday Park at Lake Tyers. We found ourselves alone in the unpowered section, under a heavy cover of melaleucas. Our late afternoon dip in the swimming pool was most welcome.

After setting up camp in Tidal River Campground we headed out at 4:00pm to explore the local area. First heading across the heavily tannin-stained Tidal River across the curved footbridge before turning west and heading towards Pillar Point. Being situated right next to a 450-site campground you will likely never be alone on any nearby walk and that was certainly the case today.

Keen to start our exploration of Wilsons Promontory National Park we stopped at one of the first tracks shown on our map. Springs Track starts several kilometres in from the park entrance and heads towards the east coast. There is no carpark, only enough off-road space for a couple of vehicles. It was a warm morning and we would have the track all to ourselves, which we were later to learn would be something of a rarity at Wilsons Prom.

Our second short, midday walk for the day had us parking in the designated car park only about 1km from Cotters Beach. As for our last walk, the track would be easily drivable but is closed off to the general public. Amongst the low coastal heath, we noted a number of birds along the way, ravens being the most common.

We departed Tidal River Campground just after 9:00am aiming to combine the couple of nearby tracks we had not yet walked in a single trip. We first crossed the Tidal River Footbridge before heading west towards Pillar Point, the weather was cool and heavily overcast with blustery winds. Looking seaward there was a lot of white water from those brisk westerlies, so we were pleased to turn and start walking more easterly up to Tidal Lookout.

A short drive up from Tidal River Campground had us at the relatively small Telegraph Saddle Carpark ready to start our walk. Yesterday, however, we noted the same road was closed and a shuttle bus service was operating from the Parks Victoria office carpark at Tidal River Campground. This is a weekend service to cater for the number of people wanting to start a walk from Telegraph Saddle.

Faced with a miserable, wet, windy day we caught up with chores and reading until the late afternoon when conditions improved enough to tempt us outside. This was a very short walk from the campground along Tidal River, onto and along Norman Beach and back to camp via the Oberon Track.

This is just a short detour off the main road and well worth a visit. The lagoon and drier marshy areas, together with surrounding trees have created a bird paradise with lots of food and shelter. During our short visit, we got to observe a lot of birds enjoying the offerings of the area.

Again the morning was not showing a lot of promise weather-wise. It had been showery with gusty winds all night and that continued into the early morning. During the 30-minute drive from Tidal River Campground to the Five Mile Road Carpark to start our walk there were two very heavy showers. However, as we arrived it was looking a little better. It seemed our delayed, 10:00am start might have paid off, at least to start with.

Darby Beach was meant to be our launch point to link several nearby walks to fill in our afternoon. However, as our arrival at the carpark was met with strong, blustery winds mixed with heavy rain squalls, we decided to sit tight until the squalls passed. An hour or so later we found ourselves unmoved and dosing off during a couple of short sunny interludes. With no changes in sight, we decided just to walk down to Darby Beach for a look.

We departed Darby Beach Carpark at 9:40am, appreciative of it being heavily overcast but for the first time in many days not windy or raining. We had been to Darby Beach on the Wednesday but the weather to too unpleasant for us to be tempted to start out.

The Tongue Point Track gradually climbs from the carpark to provide a good view of the meanders of “Darby” Creek to the east as it passes through thick heath. After climbing about 90m you pass through a saddle to catch your first glimpse of Tongue Point, immediately you realise this is going to be a very scenic walk.
