We commenced this fantastic day trip on a cool crisp morning. Due to the consistent rain in the previous week the drive through several locked gates was challenging as some of the puddles of water were up to the car number plates and there were sections that were very slippery. As Will was the only driver with a two wheel drive, he chose to leave his car and bike the last kilometre to the car park where the rest of us commenced the ride. At this stage, after riding through the mud and pooled rainwater he was regretting his decision to wear a white T shirt that day.

Jenny, Peter and Stephen had big plans for an 18 day traverse of the Western Arthurs, Eastern Arthurs and Picton Range. Trish and Dave were joining us for the Western Arthurs. With meticulous planning we were carrying all 18 days of food, Peter and I had 28.6kg packs and Jenny 26.8kg. Needless to say the best laid plans don’t always come off, as possibility the worst summer weather for 30 years presented some very big challenges.

An amazingly fortunate choice of campsite as all the tent pegs went in very easily and remained firm all night.

We drove down to the Snowy Mountains area on Friday 28th and camped at 5 Mile Dam, a little beyond Kiandra. The next morning we drove around to Round Mountain and commenced walking in overcast conditions which gradually impoved. We followed a clearly defined track along to the S.M.C. hut (locked) and had lunch just a little further on.
