We aimed for an early start for this walk with forecast high temperatures for the day. It was a 25-minute drive from Orange, and we arrived just after 8:00am to a locked gate! After a quick search of the website and a call to NPWS, it was clear that the gate would be open at 9:00am. We decided to walk the 1.2km to the start of the walk. It would be too hot to wait until 9:00am to start.

We headed off on this walk through Broad Swamp on a clear and sunny morning. It was a gentle meander on the well-formed track through the bush. It is part of a group of wetlands called Newnes Plateau Shrub Swamps. These are found only in high valleys on sandstone rock.

After completing Lithgow parkrun, we drove to the Gardens of Stone Conservation area to complete this short walk. The walk has been recently built by NPWS, and the facilities are excellent. There is a graded carpark and new drop toilets. A wide track leads to the Lost City South Lookout which provides panoramic views of endless cliffs and pagodas as far as the eye can see.

Just to wet our appetite, we wandered down from camp and had a look around the Scenic World section on the Monday evening.

Based on a drenching of 150mm of rain over recent days and subzero temperatures overnight, I decided to try to minimise probable exposure to icy conditions for my trip today. With a sunny day forecast, our best bet seemed to be to keep out in the open, away from the shade of trees – a scenic tour along the Snowy River would be a nice way to start.

After 150mm of rain over the last 36 hours, we woke to a solid cloud cover, which was forecast to clear around midday. It was now a -6°C apparent temperature with a light top-up of snow, but still very windy. A lower elevation trip amongst the trees seemed appropriate.
