This morning, I offered to lead a trip to Lake Albina. This was one of about six trips that materialised over breakfast. It would only be Sue and I who went in the end, as most other people hadn’t skied for ages and thought it might be too far for their first day, or expected it might be too exposed to some strong wind that was in the forecast.

Opting for company today I joined up with Kenn’s group who were aiming for Little Austria. With snow bridges still strongly present we were quickly across the Snowy River and climbing towards the pass between Mount Lee and Carruthers Peak. The short steep ascent up and over the lip of the ridge proved challenging to those with lighter boots and skis.

Today a mixed ability group in excess of twenty people, led again by Colin Ridley, set out in an attempt to summit Mount Townsend. Along with our NSW Nordic Ski Club group we had visitors from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. Sue and I left separately a couple of minutes earlier, heading further up Kosciuszko Road than the main group to take some panoramas of the Main Range.  Continue reading →

My previous week had been spent waiting patiently for a multi-day window of descent weather, so with the next six days after Thursday forecast to be cool, dry and very calm it was now time to act. The trip objective being to camp high on Abbott Range or Mount Townsend or thereabouts and make good use of the two heavy DSLR cameras, two lenses, tripod and multitude of other camera gear I had decided to take. There was also a brand new GoPro to christian and learn how to use. Hopefully some epic day to night time lapses, telemark runs and worthwhile photos will be recorded.   Continue reading →
