Murramarang Beachfront Nature Resort was our final stop over on our way home so we made the most of our afternoon with one last walk. Via a short stint along the beach, we made our way around the northern edge of the headland where we found what looked to be an old boiler from a shipwreck marooned on the grassy foreshore. All the way around to Mill Point we got great views up to Murramarang Range and Grasshopper Island.

From Mill Point looking out to sea, you see the tiny rock outcrop called Wasp Island, which I’m sure is a wonderful sanctuary for birdlife. Turning inland from Mill Point we walked through the tea tree forest with some parklike grassy areas beneath the trees. Under the dappled afternoon light, it looked delightful. Further along, we poked our heads out at the rock platform at Wobbegong Bay where there is a wonderful section of tessellated pavement. From here we returned to Emily Miller Beach Walking Track for another stretch through the trees this time popping out on the unnamed northern headland of Emily Miller Beach. Here there has been a deep, narrow gully cut right through the small headland. This proved some great photo opportunities. Also on this headland, we had a flyby from a White-bellied Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus leucogaster).
Back onto the track we made our way around and onto to Emily Miller Beach, yet another small, beautiful, sandy south coast beach. Here I couldn’t resist walking to the end of the beach where I had seen two guys occasionally swinging an implement at the rocks. On closer inspection I found the implement to be a geological hammer, the two geologists from Wollongong University were interested in and studying some of the older rock formations of the region, collecting samples and taking notes and photos as they went.
From here we headed back along the track and then Wasp Head Road to our campsite.

I was looking for info on the tessellations or ironstone at Wasp Head. Thanks for sharing such great information. I’m walking from Pebbly beach to Bateman’s Bay and overnight at Durras so I was hoping to photograph this unique rock formation. Cheers Colin
