Monday 13/11/2017 Isthmus Head – Bald Head
Torndirrup National Park, WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Minang country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies
The online description of this walk as a challenging 6 hour 12.5km return trip along the undulating spine of Flinders Peninsula we found to be inaccurate. It took us four hours in total and it was described as suitable for “hardcore bushwalkers with steep and difficult terrain”. It would be a shame if this summary dissuaded people from enjoying this very pleasant and scenic half day walk.
Max elevation: 207 m
Total climbing: 923 m
Total descent: -941 m
Average speed: 4.02 km/h
Total time: 03:56:56
The trail provided plenty of spectacular views of islands in the distance, the Flinders Peninsula including Isthmus Hill, Limestone Head and Bald Head and secluded pristine sandy beaches just out of reach below. Its isolated car park park is a 15 minute drive from Albany.
Whilst we encountered plenty of birds and a python curled up just off the track we didn’t sight too much else in the way of wildlife. There were also a lot of wildflowers in bloom.
The weather was overcast and produced a couple of light showers long the way. Walking varied between boardwalk along on an early section to alternating sections smooth granite and sandy limestone soil. The limestone based sections between the high points offered plenty of low vegetation and small trees.
The vegetation thinned out on the rounded granite Bald Head itself and a large rock cairn marked the end of the Peninsula.
Prior to our Bald Head walk we visited the The Gap and Natural Bridge which are very close to each other and also in Torndirrup National Park. They are only a short distance off Frenchman Bay Road
