Monday 12/2/2018 Darlington – Painted Cliffs
Maria Island National Park, TASMANIA
Paredarerme country
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)
It is a short walk from the main settlement at Darlington to the impressive Painted Cliffs at the southern end of Hopground Beach. They are accessible on a low tide with small swell.
Max elevation: 91 m
Total climbing: 166 m
Total descent: -168 m
Average speed: 4.01 km/h
Total time: 02:52:50
On leaving Darlington we passed by historic buildings from early settlement and the convict days and also sighted wombats, Cape Barron geese and kangaroos before reaching Painted Cliffs via the southern end of Hopground Beach.
Hopground Beach had beautiful white sand and very inviting looking water.
The sandstone of Painted Cliffs has been stained in beautiful patterns by iron oxide to create what looks like works of fine art. I thought they looked like Rorschach (ink blot) tests whilst Steve thought they looked similar to the cloud patterns on the surface of Jupiter.
This was a worthwhile short walk.
