23/03/2017 Martial Glacier
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, ARGENTINA
Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos), Sue Davies (Report)
The Martial Glacier is only a few kilometres from the city centre of Ushuaia and offers a pleasant half day walk with good views back to the coast and Ushuaia. It is possible to walk from the town but we drove up to the chairlift at the base of the walk.
Thursday 23/03/2017 Ushuaia – Martial Glacier return
Max elevation: 834 m
Total climbing: 579 m
Total descent: -573 m
Average speed: 4.39 km/h
Total time: 02:41:18
We decided to hike up to the Martial Glacier even though it was much smaller than the ones we had seen recently. We felt we would get some good views and it would be good to stretch our legs again.
The walk initially climbs up a wide path which is a ski run in winter. It continues to ascend along a gravel path. As we climbed higher the views of Ushuaia improved and the scene was enhanced by the autumn tones in the foliage.
The glacier itself was not really that impressive compared to those we had already seen and you are unable to actually reach it’s terminus. However, on a clear day this hike is definitley worth doing for its views over Ushuaia and the Beagle channel.
